Raspberry Pi Foundation Talk and Workshop
Raspberry Pi Foundation Talk and Workshop deatils on Eventbrite
Event: Raspberry Pi Foundation: Talk and Workshop
Date: Saturday 9/22 10am and 2pm
Location: Hack Manhattan 137 W 14th st New York, NY
Hello!
Three notices:
1) This Saturday's event is SOLD OUT, both times, and some slow people are sad-face. They cannot help that they are not as cool as you, so be kind: if your plans have changed and you cannot attend, please please reply and let us know, or cancel your ticket at the eventbri te link below.
2) If you are definitely attending, you can bring your RasPi (to show off your project or to get help). Or not, your choice.
If you don't have a RasPi and want one with you, here are two options:
a) Risky: there will be a very limited number available for sale, but not as many as we would like. Per the RasPi Foudation blog post:
"We’ve tried desperately hard to work a way to sell Raspberry Pis at the events, but sadly US state sales tax restrictions mean have made this incredibly d ifficult to arrange across four states, especially for an outfit like ours with no US presence. We’re all super-annoyed by this (especially Rob, who had visions of trekking across the US with only a gargantuan rucksack of Pis and Mountain Dew to sustain him – the big weirdo). We’re looking at handing out discount codes at the events – I’ll be confirming this later if we can sort it out. "

b) Less risky: time is tight, but you may be able to have one delivered from MCM Electronics in time for the event! They have lots in stock and you are resourceful! http://www.mcmelectronics.com/content/en-US/raspberry-pi
3) The hacker with the coolest project gets a Pibow! Bring your project and show it off! http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1986
Two more things:
1) We'll have at least 4 Rasperry Pis set up if you don't have one and just want to play with it.
2) But since we'll (theoretically) have 60 (!) people attending each session, there may be a glut at those stations.
3) You can help us out by being prepared to show yours to the curious and let them play with it a little bit. It's not required, but it sure would be mighty neighborly!
3) If you're bringing your RasPi, it will be a good idea to have your own way of interacting with it, by either
a) bringing your own (small) monitor/keyboard/mouse, or
b) (better for reasons of space) SSH in over our network using a laptop + ethernet cable + your favorite SSH client. I recommend PuTTY if you have Windows or Unix/Linux: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ For Macs, do this: http://www.panix.com/help/sw.macosx-ssh.html
You can also connect the Pi directly to your laptop via an ethernet cable - this is the best option if you can follow our guide but we'll be there to help if you have problems.
A recent email from the presenter, Rob, regarding the workshop format:
On Wed, Sep 5, 2012 at 10:35 AM, Rob Bishop <rob.bishop@raspberrypi.org> wrote: Hi all,
I just wanted to provide an update with a few more details and to hopefully answer some organizational questions that you may have.
Talk:
I'm not going to be using a PowerPoint for the talk as I much prefer a kind of informal, fireside chat with lots of interruptions for questions. I think of it more of an extended Q&A and won't require a projector for this.
Demos:
I am going to be bringing 4 Raspberry Pi demo kits for people to play with the Pi hands-on. The kits contain; Raspberry Pi Model B SD Card HDMI Cable HDMI / DVI Adaptor Network Cable Micro USB Charger USB WiFi Adaptor Mini Mouse Silicone Keyboard
I won't be able to transport any monitors with me, so if you would be able to provide up to 4 DVI or HDMI compatible monitors that would be really helpful. Additionally if you are able to provide 4 full-sized keyboards and mice to use with the Pi's that will provide a better experience than the ultra-portable ones I'll be bringing with me.
I'm going to be demoing; Android ICS, XMBC (with CEC), Raspbian Linux Distro and Quake III.
Show & Tell:
First prize for the most impressive community project will be a Pibow with stickers for anyone who has something to show the rest of the attendees.
Workshop:
The workshop is going to be a very informal opportunity to collaborate on projects and discuss the capabilities of the Raspberry Pi with other attendees. I don't have a formal 'class' for this - I'm hoping that people will naturally form groups around people who have Pi's and work together on projects. I'm thinking of it more like a kind of Raspberry Pi craft session or hackathon.
I will hopefully be providing Raspberry Pi's for sale at the event but I am going to be very limited on how many I can transport to sell at each hackspace. In order to make sure that nobody is disappointed by lack of availability, could you please encourage any attendees who know they want to get involved in the workshop to buy their Raspberry Pi's in advance. MCM Electronics have lots of stock so will be able to deliver in plenty of time for the event (http://www.mcmelectronics.com/content/en-US/raspberry-pi).
It would be really great if most people attending already had their own Pi's so that they can enter the show & tell and be in a position to make the most of the group workshop craft / hacking session.
