Machine Shop

Safety Plan and Procedure [DRAFT]

This entire document is only a draft.

Purpose

The purpose of the Hack Manhattan machine shop is to have a small area to allow for the use of a small assortment of machines for the simple construction and repair of apparatus for various needs.

Machine shops are hazardous environments by nature, due to mechanical dangers of the equipment. Therefore, there is one classification of persons allowed to use the shop - authorized user.

Definitions

Authorized User: To be determined. Should go along the lines of "someone who has been checked off by another authorized user who has validated that the person can follow rules of the shop and has signed paperwork".

Members: Persons who are members of Hack Manhattan. Being a member does not necessarily make you an authorized user.

Guest: Persons who are not members of Hack Manhattan. Guests must have a member who is also an authorized user to oversee their work and thereby extend authorized user privileges.

Applicability

The contents of this safety plan and procedure apply to all members and guests at all times.

Plan

A list of members who are authorized users will be kept up-to-date on the wiki (insert page here). New authorized members can only be added by currently authorized members.

Safety Rules and Policies

  • Personal Safety
    • Appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) is a must. No exceptions.
      • Safety Glasses: Hack Manhattan has a small set of safety glasses.
      • Feet Protection: No open toed or slipper type shoes. The entire foot must be covered and the shoe must have a thick sole. Sneakers are recommended. Heels cannot be taller than 25mm.
    • No hanging/dangling parts.
      • This includes jewelry: rings, bracelets, hanging necklaces, or dangling earrings.
      • Long hair and beards must be tied up.
      • No loose or hanging clothing, such as ties from hooded sweatshirts or loose long sleeves.
    • No gloves while machining
    • Use brushes, hooks, vacuums, or other tools to remove chips and shavings. Never use hands, fingers, or compressed air.
  • Common Sense Clauses
    • Do not rush. Stop, think, and check before you start machining.
    • Do not distract others while they are operating a machine and do not let others distract you.
    • No headphones at any time in the shop.
    • No cell phone use of any kind except for photos or video in the shop
  • Equipment
    • If you have never worked on the machine please ask an experienced member. (it's better to be annoying than dead - and more often than not we want you to ask questions, and won't be annoyed)
    • Do not try to figure out how to run a machine - ASK.
    • If it's making lots of noise, STOP! Ask for help.
    • Do not remove, displace, or damage a machine guard, or modify equipment without permission and supervision.
    • Do not leave machines running unattended.
    • Always make sure that a machine has completely stopped before placing body parts in the work area (don't try to stop rotating components with your hand - notice the TRY).
    • Only one person operating a machine at a time.
    • Secure, not hand hold, a workpiece.
    • Chuck key rule - if your hand isn't on a chuck key, it can't be in the chuck.
    • Read all labels!
  • Maintenance
    • No food!
    • Leave the machine, floor, and surrounding areas better than you found it. Sweep and vacuum.

Violation of any of these rules will result in the loss of shop use privileges.
