Access for members

From Hack Manhattan Wiki

The space is available 24/7 for all members.

To enter the space, there are three doors to pass through: the main door to the building, a vestibule door immediately past that, and the door to our unit itself. The first door requires a mechanical key to lock and unlock, although it is generally unlocked in the daytime and during events. The other two doors can be opened with an RFID key.

Getting Keys

Mechanical and RFID keys are stored in the safe. Currently the assistance of a board member is required to retrieve keys from the safe, and to update our RFID access control list as well as the building manager's.

Please try not to lose your keys! There's a $5 replacement fee for lost keys.

RFID Keys

Members should receive an RFID key for the vestibule and unit doors.

The RFID keys are 26-bit 125khz (aka H10301) format. We are responsible for buying them, and usually stock key fob and card-style keys.

The board provides updates to the building manager for the vestibule door RFID reader, and maintains the access control list for our own door lock. Updates to the building list generally take 1–2 business days.

If there are issues with either RFID lock, board members have backup mechanical keys.

Mechanical Keys

Members should also receive a mechanical key for the street door. Additionally, board members have mechanical keys for the vestibule and unit doors.

Additional keys can be made anywhere that copies keys. The board should keep good "master" copies of the keys in the safe to avoid progressive degradation via successive copies.

According to the building manager (as of December 2023) the street door should be locked at night (between 7pm and 7am) unless we have an event going on. Please lock it behind you during those times.
