3D Scanning

Historically, 3 methods have been used at HM.

Kinect

Jim has loaned us an XBOX Kinect, which we have set up for scanning at the space using ReconstructMe or Skanect software.

This works well for people-sized objects, but we've also successfully scanned a boot and other similarly sized objects.

Line laser scanner

Dave built a Spinscan using a line laser unit and stepper motor to turn the object on a turntable and take synchronized video using a webcam. This works better for high detail on smaller objects, but takes care to setup light levels and geometry (cam height etc). It also needs a better enclosure for good scans.

Photogrammetry

Autodesk Catch or similar software can be used to combine 50+ images of an object to reconstruct a 3D model. Example.
