We are located on the rear of the second floor of 34 W 37th St. Visitors can buzz the unit from the panel in the vestibule.

== Doors & Keys ==

Please see [[Access for members]]

== Electricity ==

The breakers for main space, along with our heat pump, are in a panel in the "office".

Our bathroom, the hallway lights, and the hallway bathroom are on a circuit together and the breaker for it is in a panel in the other unit on our floor (2F).

== Heating & Cooling ==

The space is heated & cooled by a heat pump on our electric meter that we are also responsible for the maintenance of.

The temperature you set on the heat pump *is not* the temperature of the air coming out. It’s the temperature you are telling the AC/heat that you want the room to be. So even if the heater were capable of heating the room to 86F, youd be making the room into a mild sauna. In actuality, the temp should never be set below 65 or above 75.

Heat pumps take a while to cycle up because they have to pressurize refrigerant in the lines and the external part of the heat pump before any temperature change actually starts to happen, so if you don’t feel temperature change coming out of it immediately that doesn’t mean that it’s not working.

If you want a breeze, the only way to get that is by dialing up the fan speed, not changing the set temp.

== Cleaning ==

Do not forget to throw out your personal trash items before you leave. Check your surrounding and do your best to help create a clean space for yourself and those creating nearby you. No one remembers everything all the time, so it works best if everyone does a little extra cleaning most of the time.

Please wash your used dishes in the basin next to the sink and please do <b> not </b> leave food out. All food stored outside the fridge must be in mouse-proof containers (glass or metal).

Expect to help others in tidying up if needed and do your best to maintain cleanliness to maintain no rats or mice around.

=== Garbage ===

Put out for collection on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday after 8pm. Everything must be bagged. Garbage goes in black plastic bags. Recycling goes in clear plastic bags.

As of April 2023 we have a contract with Waste Connections of New York.

* [[:File:Recycling_Guidelines_Flyer_2021.pdf|Flyer w/ details about recycling/trash separation and bagging]]

=== Roomba ===
There is a Roomba hiding under the tall shelf between the windows. Feel free to run it by pressing the big button in the middle.

The Roomba is surprisingly robust in its pursuit of dust and other small debris, but will still choke on larger waste and the seemingly infinite supply of bits of string to be found in dark corners. When it does, some manual attention is required. It's perhaps best thought of as an alchemical device to convert tinkering into cleaning.

== Upper floors ==

According to the landlord, do <b>not</b> go to the upper floors to avoid any complaints from upstairs tenants.

== Roof ==

Roof access is strictly <b>prohibited</b>, and accessing it will endanger our lease (this is enforced by cameras).

== Bathrooms ==

There is a bathroom inside our unit. (There is also a bathroom right outside of the door, please don't use it as it belongs to the other tenant on the our floor.)

== Water ==

Our water heater is behind the little door above the bathroom in the hallway.

=== Money ===

We take donations and also sell stuff sometimes.

==== Cash ====
We have a donations lockbox at the front of the space. If you sell something (merch, class fees), put the funds received in a [[:File:Cash_envelope.jpg|cash envelope]] (available in the stationary drawer) and '''''write what was sold on the outside''''' so it can be properly accounted for, before dropping it in the lockbox.

==== Digital ====
For donations there are a number of payment QR codes on the door as well as a [https://hackmanhattan.com/donations page on our website]. We shouuulld have dedicated payment links for each of the things we sell (for accounting)—talk to the treasurer about making new ones.

=== The Stuff ===

--insert some sort of attempt at an inventory + guide here--

=== Events ===
Events should follow the [[Meeting_2013-03-26#Space_use_policy|space use policy]]. You can check the [https://hackmanhattan.com/calendar calendar] for any known scheduling conflicts.

It's good to promote events! Talk about them on Discord (many other NYC maker-type spaces allow crossposting too). Make a post on our social accounts (get help in #social-media-admin). Many people find our stuff on Meetup, but it seems to favor events that already have people attending, so go ahead and just sign your friends up. Find an appropriate event mailing list.

==== Open House ====

There are some suggestions for [[Open_House|how to help host visitors]].

==== Classes ====
We love having classes!

Any member can run a class (non-members can too but they need a member to be there as space host). Schedule them like any other event. If you want people to find about your class and/or pay for it, you should put it on our [https://www.meetup.com/hackmanhattan Meetup]. Make a Meetup account, and then ask someone to give you the Event Host role. Then you can create an event, manage signups, and communicate with attendees.

The default class fee split (after costs) is 50/50 teacher/hack manhattan, but it might be negotiable. Usually, Hack doesn't collect their part of the fee for members, so most classes are ~half-off for members. Some teachers also decide to discount their part of the fee for members too. If you collect fees in cash, follow [[How_to_Hack_Manhattan#Cash|usual procedure]] and also send an accounting of them to finance@hackmanhattan.com so that the teacher share can be paid out in a timely manner.

You might decide to cap the number of attendees, that can be set in Meetup. We don't have an official maximum capacity for the space, but 25 guests has been proposed before.

== The Membership ==
=== Meetings ===
We have monthly meetings on the last Wednesday of the month that are run according to [[MIBS Rules]]
** creates minutes/agenda pages on wiki & updates [[Main_Page#Monthly_Business_Meetings | main page links]]
** posts first draft of minutes immediately after meeting
* Maintains member roster and election records
* Various administrivia like replacing lost keys, updating mailing list emails, etc
* Responsible for filing paperwork to maintain nonprofit status

== Hosting ==

Hosts are responsible for buzzing in visitors, welcoming them, and introducing them to the space and organization.

=== Buzzing in visitors ===
The top button on the doorbell buzzer pad in the vestibule downstairs sounds a panel inside our unit to the left of our unit's door and activates a video & audio feed. Hold the middle button to talk ("Hi, are you here for the open house?"), then release it to listen for their response (it's muted while pressed). If they confirm, press the middle button again to welcome them ("Okay, come on up to the second floor"), release, and then hold the right-most button to unlock the door temporarily. Watch the screen to ensure they actually make it in, as some people struggle and need to have the door opened by hand.

=== Welcoming visitors ===
Upon their arrival, greet them. "Welcome to Hack Manhattan." If you don't recognize them, introduce yourself and ask if it's their first time.

For first-time visitors:
# Ask what brought them to the open house. This gives you an idea of things you might want to point out to them, more questions you can ask, and people you can introduce them to.
#Offer a quick tour of the space, walking around and pointing out:
#* Homebrewing fridge
#* Retro games cabinet
#* Electronics workstation
#* 3D printers
#* Workshop with
#** Heat press
#** Miter saw
#** Hand tools
#** Router table
#** Milling machine / drill press
#** Band saw
#* Member storage
#* Sewing machines
#* Shelving with assorted materials and tools

If they're interested in anything in particular, spend more time on that topic. If members are using tools, you can ask what they're doing and use this opportunity to introduce the guest(s).

=== Introducing Hack Manhattan ===
Provide some background information about Hack Manhattan:
* Nonprofit, primarily funded by member dues
* Volunteer-run by the members
* Offers classes and events, such as:
** Journaling workshop
** Fixer's collective
** Intro to soldering

You can also inquire if they're interested in becoming a member. If so, explain the main points:
* They must visit three open houses, and on the third visit, they can ask a member to submit their application for approval by the members.
* Standard dues are $110, but there are two other tiers with the same privileges:
** A "starving hacker" rate of $55 for financially constrained individuals, such as students or those who are underemployed.
** An "engineer" rate of $160 for those who can afford to contribute more.

We have a whole page about [[recruitment]] for more details on pitching membership.

If they have questions about topics you're not familiar with, see if another member (especially another host) is present and introduce them to the guest.

=== Engaging with guests ===
If guests don't provide much information about their visit, ask additional questions like:
* What sorts of things are you interested in making?
* How did you hear about us?

After covering the basics, you can invite guests to explore on their own. If they want to use a tool, ask them to sign a waiver (located on a clip board, usually kept on the shelf between the fridge and the retro game station) and try to find a member to help them if they're not very experienced. Otherwise, invite them to have a seat at the center table. "Feel free to grab a seat and work on something or just hang out, I'll be over here if you have any questions."

If they have questions you can't answer, you can always ask on Discord.

=== If another guest arrives ===

Hopefully there's another member hosting who can handle them. If not, excuse yourself and invite your current guest to explore independently. "Sorry, I've got to get that. You're welcome to keep looking around, and grab a seat at the table if you like. Let me know if you have any more questions."

=== Wrapping up the visit ===
When people leave, remind them to join the Discord server: "Thanks for coming in! Are you on the Discord server yet? <direct them to one of the many QR codes> Have a good night!"

== Scheduling hosts ==

<s>It seems like we're busy enough again that we don't need to schedule hosts for the moment. Pretty cool.</s>

Figuring out a new process, standby.

</blockquote>

$10/mo because that’s roughly enough to cover rent if we tiled all available wall space with member storage boxes.

1 year minimum because it’s not worth the hassle of accounting for otherwise.

This is a good idea because it gives people who want to leave more of their stuff in the space a sanctioned and fair option, instead of the status quo of stashing it somewhere or just having an overflowing bin.

== Hosting ==

Hosts are responsible for buzzing in visitors, welcoming them, and introducing them to the space and organization.

=== Buzzing in visitors ===

=== Welcoming visitors ===
Upon their arrival, greet them. "Welcome to Hack Manhattan." If you don't recognize them, introduce yourself and ask if it's their first time.

For first-time visitors:
# Ask what brought them to the open house. This gives you an idea of things you might want to point out to them, more questions you can ask, and people you can introduce them to.
#Offer a quick tour of the space, walking around and pointing out:
#* Homebrewing fridge
#* Retro games cabinet
#* Electronics workstation
#* 3D printers
#* Workshop with
#** Heat press
#** Miter saw
#** Hand tools
#** Router table
#** Milling machine / drill press
#** Band saw
#* Member storage
#* Sewing machines
#* Shelving with assorted materials and tools

If they're interested in anything in particular, spend more time on that topic. If members are using tools, you can ask what they're doing and use this opportunity to introduce the guest(s).

=== Introducing Hack Manhattan ===
Provide some background information about Hack Manhattan:
* Nonprofit, primarily funded by member dues
* Volunteer-run by the members

=== Engaging with guests ===

== Scheduling hosts ==

It seems like we're busy enough again that we don't need to schedule hosts for the moment. Pretty cool.

We take donations and also sell stuff sometimes.

==== Cash ====

==== Digital ====
For donations there are a number of payment QR codes on the door as well as a [https://hackmanhattan.com/donations page on our website]. We shouuulld have dedicated payment links for each of the things we sell (for accounting)—talk to the treasurer about making new ones.
=== Events ===

==== Open House ====

There are some suggestions for [[Open_House|how to help host visitors]].

==== Classes ====

== Hosting ==

Hosts are responsible for buzzing in visitors, welcoming them, and introducing them to the space and organization.

=== Buzzing in visitors ===

=== Welcoming visitors ===
Upon their arrival, greet them. "Welcome to Hack Manhattan." If you don't recognize them, introduce yourself and ask if it's their first time.

For first-time visitors:
# Ask what brought them to the open house. This gives you an idea of things you might want to point out to them, more questions you can ask, and people you can introduce them to.
#Offer a quick tour of the space, walking around and pointing out:
#* Homebrewing fridge
#* Retro games cabinet
#* Electronics workstation
#* 3D printers
#* Workshop with
#** Heat press
#** Miter saw
#** Hand tools
#** Router table
#** Milling machine / drill press
#** Band saw
#** The abomination that is the Shopsmith, which combines a table saw, drill press, and wood lathe in one
#* Member storage
#* Sewing machines
#* Shelving with assorted materials and tools

If they're interested in anything in particular, spend more time on that topic. If members are using tools, you can ask what they're doing and use this opportunity to introduce the guest(s).

=== Introducing Hack Manhattan ===
Provide some background information about Hack Manhattan:
* Nonprofit, primarily funded by member dues
* Volunteer-run by the members

=== Engaging with guests ===

== Scheduling hosts ==
It's good to promote events! Talk about them on Discord (other NYC maker-type spaces often allow crossposting). Make a post on our social accounts (get help in #social-media-admin). ==== Classes ====

See [[Facilities]] for deets about garbage collection, utilities, etc

=== Money ===

We take donations and also sell stuff sometimes.

==== Cash ====
We have a donations lockbox at the front of the space. If you sell something (merch, class fees), put the funds received in a cash envelope and ''write what was sold on the outside'' so it can be properly accounted for, before dropping it in the lockbox.

==== Digital ====
For donations there are a number of payment QR codes on the door as well as a [https://hackmanhattan.com/donations page on our website]. We shouuulld have dedicated payment links for each of the things we sell (for accounting), talk to the treasurer about making new ones.

=== The Stuff ===

--insert some sort of attempt at an inventory + guide here--

=== Events ===
Events should follow the [[Meeting_2013-03-26#Space_use_policy|space use policy]]. You can check the [https://hackmanhattan.com/calendar calendar] for any known scheduling conflicts.

It's good to promote events! Talk about them on Discord (other NYC maker-type spaces often allow crossposting). Make a post on our social accounts (get help in #social-media-admin). Many people find our stuff on Meetup, but it seems to favor events that already have people attending, so go ahead and just sign your friends up. Find an appropriate event mailing list.

==== Open House ====
==== Classes ====

Then you can create and event, manage signups, and communicate with attendees.

The default class fee split (after costs) is 50/50 teacher/hack manhattan, but it might be negotiable. Usually, Hack doesn't collect their part of the fee for members, so most classes are ~half-off for members. Some teachers also decide to discount their part of the fee for members too. If you collect fees in cash, follow usual procedure and also send an accounting of them to finance@hackmanhattan.com so that the teacher share can be paid out in a timely manner.

My background is in software, but I've dabbled up and down the electronics stack, from custom PCBs to manufacturing automation and lots of stuff in between. I can use most of the tools in a machine shop without breaking things or people. A lot of my projects have involved dance, most recently a system that transmits on-body pressure sensor readings for use in performance and research.

Some things I've done at the space:
* assembled a bunch of custom PCBs
* built the lumber rack
* built lots of shelves (with the help of Jay, Kario, Boost, Justine, and probably some others)
* fixed the donated wall-mount hydroponics setup
* spent way too much time calibrating the E5P
* printed and finished (filled/sanded/painted) a new display holder for the EP5
* made a neat soap holder (since retired)
* substitute taught [https://www.meetup.com/hackmanhattan/events/296071269/ Robin's soldering class]
* added encryption to the door control system

I'm currently (2023 term) president of the board.

=====Official Statement from the Board of Hack Manhattan=====

Dear Members,

We are writing to inform you of a recent decision made by the board of Hack Manhattan. The person known as "Luna Turing"* was asked to resign from their position as Treasurer and as a board member of our organization. Following their resignation, we took action to terminate their membership and permanently ban them in order to protect our community.

It has come to our attention that over the past year Luna has engaged in unacceptable and harmful behavior, including fabricating stories involving serious criminal activity to manipulate members for personal gain. They engaged in deliberate intimidation and concealed their true identity in furtherance of these deceptions. These needless actions have caused significant emotional distress to multiple members, including severe consequences for their professional and personal lives.

We have received direct confirmation from multiple people affected, as well as an admission from Luna regarding their conduct.

We want to make it clear that Luna is no longer affiliated with Hack Manhattan, and we strongly advise against extending any form of trust to them. If you have been impacted or have any concerns regarding their actions, particularly if you have been subjected to their lies and need help understanding what is true, we encourage you to reach out to us, either directly or at board@hackmanhattan.com. We are committed to supporting anyone affected and ensuring that our community is a safe and welcoming space.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support as we navigate this difficult situation. We appreciate the resilience of our members and are working diligently to prevent any further harm.

Sincerely,<br/>
The Board of Hack Manhattan

<nowiki>*</nowiki> Luna Turing is neither their given name, nor their current chosen legal name
