- Thursday nights are 3D Thursdays! Visit us from 7 p.m. onwards on Thursday nights.. Whether you just want to learn how to print, have some objects or designs in mind for printing, or just want to use our printers, feel free to drop in and give it a try. If you do have specific models in mind, it would be a good idea to check if they are printable first, as some models will print better than others. We have several 3D printers in use at the space:

- [[User:Guan|Guan]] loaned his [[PrusaMendelV2 | Prusa Mendel V2]], to the space. It can print in PLA or ABS, but we prefer you use PLA if possible. There are instructions on how to use it [[PrusaMendelV2 Howto|here]]

- [[User:rmd6502|Rob]] bought an [[Ultimaker]] and loaned it to the space. This printer works very well, producing nice prints and is reliable.

- The excellent Brook Drumm of [http://www.printrbot.com Printrbot] donated a number of Printrbots to the space, which can be used by visitors. One of the Printrbot Jr printers is hosted on a Raspberry Pi running Octoprint, with CuraEngine slicer integration. Login to it using the IP address printed on the side of the printer, and upload an STL!

- We built and modified several [[Wallace]] [http://reprap.org/wiki/Wallace Repraps].

At the last meeting we changed the bylaws to allow us to adopt abbreviated procedures when a member who resigned or whose membership was terminated for nonpayment of dues wishes to become a member again. Under the procedures we adopt, such members would not have to make the 3 visits again.

Proposal: A statement from the new member is circulated to the members list. If there are no objections within N days, that member is readmitted, and otherwise the matter is referred to the next business meeting.

Should the member seeking readmission fulfill other requirements? For example, receive the briefing if he or she never received it in the first place? Pay back dues? Or should things like this be on a case by case basis? Should the board be able to attach conditions for readmission?

== Purchasing a new 3D Printer ==

Several of us have found the working 3D printers at the space inadequate; what we have is generally not open to upgrading or materials other than PLA, and the demand for using the printers often exceeds the supply of printers. The simplest solution is just to buy another printer, and we've looked around and selected a $500 mainstream Makerbot-clone type printer that is maintainable and upgradable with widely available parts, and can reasonably be expected to work well from the get-go. This should lighten our load. James Carpino will recommend the specific printer, and I propose we split the cost partly between specific members and HM funds. The breakdown proposed is, $200 total from several HM members, $100 from HM general funds, and $200 from the 3d printing filament fund (which is reported to have enough to support this allocation and still buy plenty of filament).

We propose an update to the membership application process to streamline it and make it more useful for everyone.

Since the membership of HM is much bigger than it has been in years past, it takes more time for new members to become familiar with the existing members, our culture, and the organization as a whole. These introductions have been done informally and inconsistently in the past. As we grow, this works less well, and we also have more at stake as an organization.

We propose that prospective members be required to attend a short but comprehensive briefing session, no less than one week before membership is to be approved at a business meeting. These sessions will be conducted by a Board member or another volunteer. The briefing session will include information on:

* Hack Manhattan's history and purpose, and how the community works
* Communication tools available to members and others (Blabber, members@, wiki)
* Our Bylaws and rules, written and unwritten
* Everything at https://wiki.hackmanhattan.com/MembershipInfo and https://wiki.hackmanhattan.com/Member_Orientation
* Procedures for paying dues
* Safety briefing, including emergency procedures and signing of waiver

A short bio will be requested from prospective members and will be emailed to the members list one week prior to the monthly business meeting. The agenda item for prospective members will include the date of the briefing and the name of the briefer.

Prospective members must make at least 2 (3?) visits to the space before the business meeting.

In certain rare circumstances, the board may recommend at the business meeting that membership be made conditional on board approval, in order to conduct due diligence—similar to when we admitted minors. The board will either approve the application or submit it to the next business meeting for substantive consideration.

The Bylaws still state that membership is approved by vote of the members on the motion of two members. These changes are not Bylaws changes, but a statement of policy on the criteria we would ordinarily apply when voting on membership applications. Formally, the proposal is to amend the rules of procedure for our business meetings so that consideration of membership applications that don't fulfill the criteria is out of order. In each case, we could make exceptions by a majority vote, just as we can make exceptions to the current two-visit rule. (It would actually take two votes, one to suspend the rules, and another to approve the application.)

Timeline for the quickest possible membership process in September 2014, if these procedures had been in place:

* Visit September 16, 18 and 23
* Briefing during Tuesday, September 23 meeting
* Bio is circulated September 24
* Approval at business meeting Tuesday, September 30

# at least 5 days prior to the business meeting, an email was sent to the members with a short biography of the prospective member.

A motion recommended by the board (but made by any member) that a membership application be made conditional on board approval has precedence over all other business.
