Consensus Agenda
Procedure for readmission after termination due to resignation or nonpayment of dues
At the last meeting we changed the bylaws to allow us to adopt abbreviated procedures when a member who resigned or whose membership was terminated for nonpayment of dues wishes to become a member again. Under the procedures we adopt, such members would not have to make the 3 visits again.

Proposal: A statement from the new member is circulated to the members list. If there are no objections within N days, that member is readmitted, and otherwise the matter is referred to the next business meeting.

Should the member seeking readmission fulfill other requirements? For example, receive the briefing if he or she never received it in the first place? Pay back dues? Or should things like this be on a case by case basis? Should the board be able to attach conditions for readmission?

Proposal for new rule
Rule 8 is replaced with:

A former member whose membership was terminated by resignation or because of failure to pay dues may be readmitted by the board if the request is circulated to the members and no objection is received for 5 days, under such conditions as are specified in the request or by the board.
:Move to the next meeting - I don't see any discussion about this on the members or public list. Leee (talk) 12:02, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
::Instead of moving it, I circulated an email. Why clog up tomorrow what can be resolved today? -Stove
:::Is there still time? I thought consensus items had to be taken care of by Thursday. Leee (talk) 07:27, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
:::Eugene, now you are acting in bad faith. I told you verbally that the deadline is Saturday night, and you can confirm this at MIBS Rules. Or trolling me, in which case 👌 --Guan (talk) 13:13, 25 July 2015 (UTC)
::::Sounds good - I'm actually still confused between the distinction between Thursday/5 day deadline for new members and this deadline for agenda items. Aren't the two both considered agenda items? Also, I have no idea why emoji is acceptable for online conversations nowadays - maybe I should check it out. Leee (talk) 14:38, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
:::::If you read the rules very literally, which I don't necessarily encourage, only the notice to the members list has to go out 5 days before. The new member can be added to the agenda Saturday night. It's to give extra time to review new member requests and make sure everyone sees the bios. Guan (talk) 15:54, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
::::::Okay. Why aren't agenda items given the same, if not additional, amount of care? Leee (talk) 19:02, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

Confidential membership matter
Non-members may be excluded from the discussion of this item.

Purchasing a new 3D Printer
Several of us have found the working 3D printers at the space inadequate; what we have is generally not open to upgrading or materials other than PLA, and the demand for using the printers often exceeds the supply of printers. The simplest solution is just to buy another printer, and we've looked around and selected a $500 mainstream Makerbot-clone type printer that is maintainable and upgradable with widely available parts, and can reasonably be expected to work well from the get-go. This should lighten our load. James Carpino will recommend the specific printer, and I propose we split the cost partly between specific members and HM funds. The breakdown proposed is, $200 total from several HM members, $100 from HM general funds, and $200 from the 3d printing filament fund (which is reported to have enough to support this allocation and still buy plenty of filament).

Notice for potential donors: The funds would be donated to HM (and can be deducted, of course). You won't be "bought out" when you leave HM. It's not impossible to do that a construction like that, but it's a hassle and risky, and I wouldn't consider it for such a small amount. --Guan (talk) 14:15, 25 July 2015 (UTC)

* Has the member visited 3 times at the regular Tuesday and Thursday open nights?
* Has the member received the briefing? When, and who was the briefer?
* Has the member's bio and photo been circulated on the members list? (not just blabber)

Rob Johnson briefed by Konsgn on 2015-07-16. Has visited 3 times, bio and photo have been circulated.

John O'Brien briefed by Guan on 2015-06-30. Has visited 3 times, bio and photo have been circulated.

Consensus Agenda
Members meeting: There is a proposal afoot to make this meeting an official meeting of members within the meaning of section 603 of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law, to consider changes to the Bylaws. The changes proposed for the November annual meeting have been moved here, with slight adjustments to fit the circumstances.

Change in Bylaws: termination for failure to pay dues
The third paragraph of Article 2, Section 7, is amended to
<blockquote><p>Termination of membership due to failure to pay dues, fees or assessments is self-executing and automatically effective</p>
<p>(i) 60 days after the period for which dues have been paid has lapsed, for failure to pay dues or</p>
<p>(ii) 30 days after fees or assessments are due, for failure to pay fees or assessments,</p>
<p>or when otherwise effected by the board or a decision of the members.</p>
<p>A former member must make immediate arrangements to resolve the practical implications of termination, according to procedures adopted by the members or the board. No act, omission or failure by the corporation may prejudice the requirement of former members to fulfill their obligations under the corporation's Bylaws or rules.</p></blockquote>

This paragraph is added to Article 2, Section 7, of the Bylaws:

<blockquote>The members may adopt abbreviated procedures for the admission of former members whose membership was terminated by resignation or for failure to pay dues, fees or assessments.</blockquote>

The first paragraph of Article 2, Section 7, is amended by appending "or the members" after each occurrence of "the board". The fourth paragraph is amended in the same way.

Lower quorum requirements
Article 3, Section 6, is amended by replacing the first two paragraphs with the following:

<blockquote><p>A quorum for regularly scheduled monthly members meetings is zero members.</p><p>A quorum for meetings of members as provided in Article 6 of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law, including annual meetings, is the lesser of one hundred members or one-tenth of the members entitled to vote at the beginning of the meeting.</p>
<p>Members represented by a proxy continue to count as present for the purpose of determining whether a meeting is quorate.</p></blockquote>

(The original version proposed lowering the quorum requirement to zero. That is illegal for "real" member meetings.)

Relax proxy limits
Article 3, Section 4, is amended by replacing the last paragraph with the following:

<blockquote>Except for elections, a member may vote on behalf of at most two other members, or one-tenth of the members entitled to vote at the meeting, whichever is higher. A proxy is valid only for a specific meeting or meetings designated in the proxy.</blockquote>

Clarification of obligation to pay dues
The last paragraph of Article 2, Section 7, of the Bylaws is amended by replacing the two instances of “or omission” with a comma and “omission or failure”.

Confirming power of members to make rules for the space
Article 2, Section 5, is amended by adding:

<blockquote><p>The members may continue to make rules for limiting the access of individual members to use the corporation's facilities and equipment under urgent or extraordinary circumstances, pending a decision on termination of membership.</p></blockquote>

Board term does not end if no election was held due to lack of a quorum
Article 4, Section 3, is amended by replacing "at the following annual meeting" in the first sentence of the last paragraph with "upon the next election for that office or directorship at a meeting of members", and by adding at the end of the last paragraph: "If an election at a meeting of members is not held due to the lack of a quorum, the board must call a new meeting as soon as practical."

Other technical corrections to clarify our compliance with the law
Article 3, Section 6, is amended by adding:

<blockquote><p>The procedure for online votes continues to apply only to matters which are not required to be decided by a vote at a meeting of members by the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law.</p></blockquote>
Public Service Announcement: We Are Apparently Environmentalists
Or at least, in Matt's perfect vision. However, the following statements are reasonable not only in the interest of saving the environment but saving money as well. Please don't keep the AC (now ACs?) running overnight. The AC on the EE side has a timer on it as a makeshift "remote control". It's a feature. Not a bug. (The following statement does bug me personally because I think we should have ice all the time, but I'm hot.) The ice maker is now on a timer as well. These timers are apparently "simple" to use.
:You are not as hot as you think. --Guan (talk) 13:59, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
::: Also, I said "not as hot as you think." --Guan (talk) 23:42, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

You All Are Disgusting Slobs (with no sense of organization)
Just because we're a hackerspace doesn't mean we can't have nice things. This includes a clean space. Matt, Rob, and Eugene cleaned 3/5th of the Laptop Island/Laptopia yesterday - this involved wet-wiping down the tables, "commercial citrus degreasers" that evidently don't work, mopping the floor underneath them, and moving the disgusting dirty mess of storage to the project space area. Eugene started organizing "cubicleish area" in preparation for the cleaning of the rats nest. We intend (and hope others will pitch in) to clean the last two parts nearest to the windows that compose Laptop Island/Laptopia. In addition, if you are well versed with industrial cleaners, your help would be much appreciated in degreasing parts of the tables.

Because Why Not?
Following this intense ride of passion for making the space better, we also went ahead and installed the air conditioner that used to just be my foot rest into the unused air conditioner area. Matt did one hell of a job with insulation. Kudos to him.

WE WANT YOU!
To better the space. See something? Don't say something, just do it. (ugh too many tropes I'll show myself out.)

Antenna Install
A (gently used - read: never used while deployed in an attic) dipole antenna (Alpha Delta DX-CC) will be installed over the course of the next few weeks, pending building approval.

The antenna is a dipole, composed of two "legs" and a center. The center will be hoisted with a flagpole style setup. Three eyeloops will be installed walldog style into the chimney stack, one at the top, two at the bottom. A pair of a top and bottom eyeloop will be used to loop thin rope, with the third eyeloop at the bottom used to lock the position of the rope when the antenna is deployed - this way one can perform maintenance by lowering the antenna whenever necessary. <strike>The legs will be guyed - the end closer to the front will be tied to a clamp on the I beam, and the other end will be guyed to a clamp on the ledge. Please see the photo to the right for a diagram for placement.</strike> Please ask User:Leee for updated details on how the legs will be set up. The antenna won't be hooked up to coax yet but the intention is to run coax down through some piping and inside into the building, very much unlike the current sad vertical (???) that's out there. (Feel free to take down the sad vertical and coax. It was a temporary experiment. It did surprisingly get continental US, Germany/Poland and South Africa on 15m, looking forward to seeing what yours will do! --DrReeves (talk) 23:46, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

For the radio nerds out there, this will give us a decent throw into Europe and that general vicinity, as well as the continental US. This will vastly improve our ability to work digital, as well as give us a chance to break through the noise for SSB during contests and the like.

The antenna (Alpha Delta DX-CC) is a multi-band center fed dipole and can cover 10-20-40 meters. It can do okayish sometimes on WARC bands but you'll need a pretty damn good tuner and low expectations.

Amateur Radio Hardware
In the same vein, an Icom IC-7100 transceiver, MFJ (short for Mighty Fine Junk) 100W tuner, and a 32A power supply (probably switching) will be placed on loan to the space since their current owner spends more time at work and HM than at home. The reasoning for "loaning" instead of donating is because one should take responsibility for the hardware and maintenance should the need arise. The hardware would take place of what's currently on the desk. Since the transceiver was designed as a mobile with a remote head unit, the transceiver, tuner, and power supply can be in one place (floor?) while the remote control head can stay on the table. The current (Kenwood transceiver? Sad power supply? Manual LC tuner?) hardware definitely should be kept somewhere as backup, not to mention just in case enough Hack Manhattan members/operators decides to run M/2 (multiple transmitters, 2 operators) or even perhaps multi-multi (multiple transmitters, multiple operators). What a dream!

CoderDojo Maker event
Matt managed to wrangle Johnny into spending Saturday entertaining some kids at CoderDojo and promoting the space. While Matt did what he does best, making a huge mess and teaching kids to ignore their parents, Johnny wowed kids and parents alike with the power of the Pi! The event was fun, and it was a nice opportunity to interact with the community and raise a bit of awareness. We, as a community, should consider being more present at some of these community events to promote making in general, as well as specifically Hack Manhattan. And they had beer...afterwards, of course. -Matt
If you are a new member, you will have just completed the application process. Welcome! This page gives a lot of useful information and directions, please read it all.

As a new member, please familiarize yourself with the following:

* The Bylaws of Hack Manhattan
* The Rules of Hack Manhattan
* Our Anti-Harassment_Policy
* The Procedures we use for Meetings
* How to get involved with recruiting more members so that we can pay the rent!
* Our space use policy if you plan to host events.
* Use good judgment at all times.

Organizational
* Activities are member-driven at Hack Manhattan. We are a 'do-ocracy'. No-one will do it for you, but others may help if you encourage them! Post your ideas and get help on our mailing list
* Hack Manhattan is run by and for the membership as a whole, so usually the best way to address any issue is first to ask the members for their opinion on the mailing list.
* You are encouraged to attend and vote at our monthly business meetings, held on the last Tuesday of every month. While the Board has very limited powers to deal with day-to-day management of the space, power to shape the space ultimately rests with the members.
* The members are all responsible for creating the atmosphere and environment in the space.
* If you would like to take a class or teach a class, or indeed have anything you'd like to contribute or ask of the community, get involved and ask on our mailing list
* Events are listed at our Meetup page. Meetup currently does not allow co-sponsoring of events, so please add your event to our Meetup calendar too, if you have your own Meetup group already.
* There is a members-only mailing list for sensitive matters. Only post to it if it's something that should be kept secret, in the spirit of transparency and because membership of the members list is mandatory. Most things go on Blabber.
* Post to Blabber by sending a regular email to blabber@list.hackmanhattan.com.
* If you ever want to resign your membership, the most important thing is to tell us. If you inform us, we will refund membership dues accidentally paid. Don't forget to return your keys. Don't just stop paying—we reserve the right to come after you for dues until you have informed us that you are leaving.

Safety
* If you would like to use any of the power tools in the workshop, before you do so please print and sign the liability waiver () and give it to a Board member.
* If you don't know how to use a tool, please ask a knowledgeable member first so that you can be trained to safely use it. Be safe when using equipment: eye, ear, hand protection, and tie back long hair.
* Only one splitter or surge protector per outlet. Do not “daisy chain” them.
* In general, if you have concerns about any kind of wrongdoing at Hack Manhattan, please contact the board (at board(at)hackmanhattan.com), or any individual board member, or discuss on the members list. If you are unsure and don't want to do those things, consult with another member. Use your judgment and proceed in the manner you feel comfortable. Call 911 if you're observing a crime in progress. But we do ask you to contact us first if something is not serious or not urgent. In any situation in which you would otherwise have called 311, for example, please contact us first.
* Non-members are generally allowed to visit and use the space whenever a member is present and willing to host. You can open the street door by pressing one of the 'door' buttons on the intercom either near the right window or next to the coat rack.
* If you feel uncomfortable with a visitor, or you are closing up or you don't want to be alone with them, or you simply don't want the trouble, you can always ask visitors to leave. If they refuse or you feel unsafe in any way, it's always okay to just get up and leave. Try to contact the board, or another member, but don't worry about anything in the space (and if it's that bad, don't worry about your own stuff either: just go!). Remember that there are often also others in the building who may be able to help
* You are not a bouncer. Your personal safety and comfort comes first.

Practical things
* You should receive 2 keys, one for the street level door, and one for the top lock of the East (smaller) door to the main space. Both locks can be difficult, try out both locks ahead of time to get a feel for them.
* Lending out your keys to a non-member is not acceptable, and may put your own membership at risk.
* Please make sure all doors are locked behind you if you are the last person out of the space, close the windows and turn off the lights/AC/soldering irons/printers.
* The switch for the lights over the enter tables is the blue dimmer just inside the center shelving unit. Push it to toggle on and off, and turn to dim. The lights for the machine shop and West side of the main space are dimmer sliders under the metal covers near the (larger) West door.
* If there is an item that you think the space should have, or it is missing, please email Guan and we'll investigate/replace (including consumables that need to be replaced).
* Beverages are provided on the honor system; please contribute to the donations box above the fridge if you take one. Same goes for plastic filament (has its own box).
* If you use the roof, be aware that it is a communal space with other tenants in the building. Please don't put undue pressure on the roof membrane, and ask a Board member if you have a project you'd like to do up there.
* We do welcome donations of equipment, but there is now very limited space to store large pieces or boxes of stuff. Please check with other members or the Board if you are thinking of making a permanent donation.

Storage and member items
* Members may to store a limited amount of project material on the shelves underneath Brain Bats. Please take a clear plastic box for your storage, label it with your name (label makers are available on the center shelves) and avoid using cardboard boxes for storage. Items on the shelving units near the window are for communal use.
* If you leave a project in the space, please label it with your name. If you do not do this, it may be either cleared away, hacked, thrown out or disassembled for parts!
* We cannot be held responsible for any packages sent to the hackerspace. If someone does accept a package, you will usually find it somewhere near the central shelving area.

Garbage and cleanup
* Leave the space cleaner than you found it, we have no cleaning staff. If you can spare some time to help with housekeeping chores, it would be appreciated. Brooms and cleaning supplies can be found in the restroom.
* We try to keep the center tables clear for everyone to work at. Please clear your stuff off when you leave.
* Recycling (metal/glass/plastic) is collected in clear plastic bags. Please flatten any empty cardboard boxes you have and stack with any other cardboard.
* Regular trash cans (white bags) should be emptied when full and collected with other white bags in a black bag for disposal on the kerb on Monday or Thursday after 6 p.m. If you are in the space at these times, please do put out any black or clear bags of waste, to prevent the space getting stinky / overrun with rodents.

Resources
* Our wiki is a great source of information for the community, and we encourage you to contribute to it. Members should sign up for a wiki account if you didn't already do so as part of the payment procedure. (Note: When it asks for your name, that will be your username, so it may be easier to pick something you would normally use as a username, without spaces.)

A member who ceases to pay dues, with the intention of terminating membership in Hack Manhattan, without informing the Treasurer or the Board by email or in writing, is liable to pay dues until the effective termination date, as well as an assessment of one month of dues. The effective termination date is the date on which the earlier of the following occurs:

(i) the member gives notice of termination,

(ii) the board effects a decision terminating membership, or

(iii) the member returns their keys, retrieves their effects, and otherwise resolves all practical aspects of their membership.

Readmission of former member
This formalizes our current practice:

A former member may be readmitted without a decision of the members if, in the board's judgment, the former member is suitable for membership and does not intend to leave and rejoin on a recurring basis.
I just graduated last month with my (second) B.A. (Comp Sci-Math) from Columbia, prior to which I served four years active duty in the Marine Corps.

I’ve involved in the NYC hacker scene for awhile when I’ve lived here (I used to go to 2600 meeting back when I grew up here, good times at the Halfway Hacker House Ranch if anyone remembers). I regularly go to hacker conferences (started going to Defcon around Defcon 5, most recently went to Defcon 20, and Toorcon).

I like software defined radio, drones, and making stuff. I’m presently looking for work in the NYC area as a programmer or maybe DevOps type work.

My shitty webpage is up at http://about.me/robcohen (I’ve been busy with school, working on making rcohen.me right now).

On the side I’m an avid crossfitter, and I’m trying to learn BJJ right now.

The consensus seems to be that these are best powered with either a separate 3.3 V supply capable of at least 200 mA, or failing that 3V3 LDO from the 5V line, need level conversion on the digital IO, and at least CH_PD and RST (maybe also GPIO0/2) should be pulled up to VCC.

* 200 mA is not nearly enough for peak current draws. If you have a 3.3V supply that small, I would have a giant decoupling capacitor, in the hundreds of uF range. I would recommend at least 500 mA and ideally 1 A with plenty of decoupling. The 3.3V regulator on the Seeeduino can supply this. --Guan (talk) 18:49, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

I had success using the ChipKit Uno32, which provides 425 mA on 3V3, has 3V3 digital IO and even has two hardware serial ports, which is very handy, as software serial is limited to 19200 bps, and older firmware defaults to 57600 or 115200 bps.
A firmware upgrade to at least 0.9.2.2 improves stability, defaults baud rate to 9600, and allows control of baud rate. With the 0.9.2.2 firmware you need to send newline+CR after each command.

The module puts out a number of different error messages. This seems to happen more often in crowded networks. Resetting the module on errors by pulling either RESET or CH_PD low for a short period is a possible work-around.

Here is some example code for the Uno32 with ESP8266 and the Basic IO Shield

A firmware upgrade to at least 0.9.2.2 improves stability, defaults baud rate to 9600, and allows control of baud rate. With the 0.9.2.2 firmware you need to send newline+CR after each command.

The module puts out a number of different error messages. This seems to happen more often in crowded networks. Resetting the module on errors by pulling either RESET or CH_PD low for a short period is a possible work-around.

Welcome to Hack Manhattan! - Important Info, Please Read
If you are a new member, you will have just completed the application process. Welcome! This page gives a lot of useful information and directions, please read it all.

As a new member, please familiarize yourself with the following:

* The Bylaws of Hack Manhattan
* The Rules of Hack Manhattan
* Our Anti-Harassment_Policy
* The Procedures we use for Meetings
* How to get involved with recruiting more members so that we can pay the rent!
* Our space use policy if you plan to host events.

Organizational
* Activities are member-driven at Hack Manhattan. We are a 'do-ocracy'. No-one will do it for you, but others may help if you encourage them! Post your ideas and get help on our mailing list
